Douglas McCauley is an Associate Professor in the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology at the University of California Santa Barbara. He serves as the Director of the Benioff Ocean Initiative - an applied ocean research center based at UC Santa Barbara’s Marine Science Institute. Prof. McCauley has a degree in political science and a degree in biology from the University of California at Berkeley and a PhD in Biology from Stanford University. He conducted postdoctoral research at Stanford University, Princeton University, and UC Berkeley. He is a Sloan Research Fellow in the Ocean Sciences and his research has been featured in outlets such as the New York Times, Time, Economist, National Geographic, and the BBC.
Prof. McCauley’s research focuses upon using advances in marine science to promote ocean health.
